Shell limestone in Lahstedt ?
The Bolzberg near Gadenstedt, opposite the public outdoor swimming pool is an unimpressive small forest with surprising landmarks from history and geology situated.
Entering the Bolzberg, you will be lead by sign-boards; mainly to an old quarry, a rock face that one wouldn't necessarily expect in the Peine land.
The east-flank of the Groß Ilseder salt deposit, emerges from a big depth and shows layers of shell limestone.
Fossil finds show plants and animals that lived in this area more than 200 million years ago.
Middle Age traces are also there. Trenches and parapets are relicts of a landwehr facility, which were probably used to safeguard Gadenstedt against threats from the Fuhse lowlands.
Interesting is also a narrow pass along the quarry, which is unique in the district. It was used to built the Gadenstedter church in the 13th-century and then continuously until the end of the 19th-century.
Sign-boards explain all these peculiarities and mention also the partly rare fauna and invite you to take time to reflect.
